High temperatures can be especially dangerous for your dog — here’s how to help keep them cool

Jun 29, 2023

This has been the hottest summer ever recorded in history, and not only do we feel it, but our dogs feel it, too. High temperatures and high humidity can be especially dangerous for our furry friends, so limiting outdoor exercise and providing plenty of shade and water to prevent heatstroke is important. However, if you must take them outside, you can buy a few things to help keep your dog cool in the summer.

Besides keeping them inside in the air conditioning, you can let your dog lick ice cubes or make DIY pupsicles, apply ice packs and cool towels to their body and keep them out of direct sunlight. You can also invest in these affordable products from Amazon to help protect their paws, help them stay cool and keep them hydrated. Check out the list below if you’re looking for more ways to keep your dog cool in this ridiculous high heat.

Available in three sizes.

All you need to do is wet this lightweight bandana and wring it out to activate the cooling effect. In fact, it will stay cool for up to six hours. Wrap it around your dog’s neck to help keep them cool or cool them down. It comes in three sizes, so you can choose the right one for your pet. (Psst! The brand also makes a cooling vest!)

Available in five sizes, starting at $32.98.

I recently purchased this cooling mat for my dog, and it really works. You don’t need any water or need to put it in the fridge or freezer. Applying pressure to the patented gel-filled mat releases a cooling sensation for up to three hours. It automatically recharges after 15 to 20 minutes of non-use, too. The product description advises against using it in direct sunlight, so I plan to let my dog lay on his in the shade when we dine outside. It will give him a cool, comfy spot to relax (and beg for any crumbs).

Available in two sizes.

This bottle has a bowl built into the lid to give your dog water on the go. It comes in four colors and two sizes: 27 fluid ounces and 40 fluid ounces. Simply fill it with water and put on the leak-proof lid. When your dog is thirsty, fold open the bowl and press the button to release the water. Whatever water they don’t drink can go right back into the bottle through the water filter port, so you don’t waste a drop.

Available in multiple sizes and colors.

Hot asphalt can seriously burn your pup’s paws. According to an article from the American Kennel Club, the ground may be too hot for your dog if the temperature is 85 degrees Fahrenheit or higher outside. You can test it by placing your hand on the ground for 10 seconds; if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them. Of course, when you can’t avoid taking your dog outside, you can protect their paws with booties and walk in the shade when possible.

If your dog is new to booties, try putting them on their front or back paws first and showing them it’s OK to walk in them. Once they’re comfortable, put all four booties on and reward them with treats.

Available in three sizes.

If you have a water-loving dog, make the heat fun for them with a splash pad. This will allow them to play outside, get some energy out and get some fresh air — but stay cool while doing so. This one from Amazon has a thick bottom mat to prevent rips and tears. You can also increase or decrease the height of the water by adjusting the pressure. It comes in three sizes to accommodate all dogs.
